Gut issues are so prevalent these days that people are starting to turn to traditional remedies for a cure.
Kefir is being brought back into fashion to help combat a myriad of problems, and is already showing a huge range of benefits.
So what exactly IS kefir?
Kefir is an enzyme-rich fermented food packed with healthy bacteria to restore your gut balance. It is slightly similar to yoghurt but far, far more nutritious, containing minerals, B vitamins and protein, plus it can be taken as a drink for all those yoghurt- phobic people out there!
Due to the fact that about 70% of the immune system is found in your gut, not only is kefir great for digestive issues but it can also boost the immune system and help tackle many immune-related conditions. Amazingly it has even been shown to help reduce cravings for things like sugar too!
Whilst kefir can be made from dairy, I personally think coconut water is by far the best option, as many people with digestive and immune conditions are unable to tolerate milk products easily. Not only that, but coconut water itself is a miracle product…promoting skin health, digestive health, hydration and even weight loss!
To make kefir from coconut water all you need is a coconut and some kefir starter culture! Open the coconut (please be careful with opening it!), strain the water, warm it slightly in a pan until it reaches body temperature, stir in the culture and put in a sealed jar. Leave overnight until water has gone cloudy and store in the fridge. The water will last about 3 days but you can use a couple of tablespoons from the old batch to make a whole new batch! It’s very exciting!!
For every pack of kefir starter culture, you will need roughly 3 coconuts. I’ve created a little YouTube video showing how it’s done!
