Are You Getting Enough Magnesium?

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals that we use in the body, and is involved in over 300 enzyme reactions in our body! It’s used for energy production, nerve function, muscle control, and getting rid of harmful toxins from the environment… so… making sure you have good levels is an important game plan!

Magnesium can help you deal with stress, period pains, constipation and can also help you sleep better, slow ageing, and help the absorption of vitamin D (which is THE nutrient for bones and immune health)! Importantly, it also helps keep your thyroid healthy, which helps with periods and baby making.

That being said, annoyingly magnesium is one of the minerals that we’re most likely to be deficient in! This is likely due to rubbish soil quality, and the fact that stress can actually use up our magnesium stores (it’s a catch 22 really…)

Signs that you're low in magnesium

There are loads of signs that magnesium may need topping up. Here are some of the ones I see with my clients:

  • Constipation
  • Period problems and menstrual cramps
  • Muscle cramps and aches
  • Stress
  • Insomnia
  • Migraines
  • Tiredness
  • Digestive issues
  • Recurring infections
  • Mood swings and anxiety
  • PMS
  • Heart issues

Our body tends to give us signs when we need a little looking after, so if you have any of the above symptoms, get some magnesium- rich foods into your life!

Foods high in magnesium

  • Leafy greens (kale, broccoli, collard greens, Brussels sprouts etc)
  • Black beans
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Avocado
  • Dark chocolate

* However, if you’re stressed out, eating dark chocolate may not be the best option as it’s high in caffeine, which can cause more stress…

Get floating...

Another way to get magnesium in, is to have a bath with Epsom salts. The salts are made from magnesium, sulphates and oxygen, which have been used for centuries as a natural relaxation remedy!
When they’re put into water and you have a soak, it helps the absorption of magnesium in the body!

Floatation tanks are also the latest trend in the health world, as they are pods that contain 600 kg of Epsom salts…

All you do is just lie in a pod, close the lid and float for an hour listening to spa music (bliss!). Studies have even shown that it can be like meditating as it’s just SO relaxing!

Benefits of the flotation tanks include an energy boost, immune boost and faster recovery from injuries!

Supplements

In an ideal world we’d get all our nutrients from food, but due to our stressful lifestyle and rubbish soil quality, we sometimes need to get in an extra high dose of magnesium in supplement form.

There are different forms of magnesium, but my fave is magnesium glycinate. It’s much more absorbable than most other forms and can help balance things out without a laxative effect that can be common with other products. The glycinate is also bound to glycine meaning that it can help promote sleep, so it’s a win- win from most angles!

If you suspect you’re low in magnesium, message me and we can work on a plan to get you feeling great again!
