Whether it’s acne, eczema, psoriasis or any other skin issue, the answer is never really in our skincare products, as ironic as that sounds! We have to get to the ROOT cause of why our skin problems are happening in the first place. Here are the top 4 reasons your skin may not be happy:
1. Hormonal Imbalance
A hormonal imbalance is why sometimes the pill can appear to clear up acne. The only problem is that it isn’t getting to the root cause, and a lot of women tend to see their skin issues resurface once stopping it.
Acne on the jawline and back is usually a sign that there is a hormonal factor in play.
More often than not, hormonal skin issues can be linked to conditions like PCOS or higher levels of testosterone as it can increase oil production.
2. Nutrient Levels
Sometimes low levels of certain nutrients can lead to bad skin. Zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C and selenium are all massively important when trying to get that glow… and interestingly again, the pill can deplete these nutrients, leading you further into a spiral. This is why I’m SO passionate about getting to the root cause rather than just going on pills to deal with the surface level problems.
3. Gut Imbalance
If you have IBS, constipation, loose stools, bloating or any kind of gut pain, this could indicate that your skin issues may actually be related to your gut health. Our gut is made up of loads of different species of bacteria and if there is an imbalance where there are higher levels of bad bacteria than good, this can cause all sorts of issues, reflected in the skin. An imbalance in gut bacteria can arise from antibiotic use, stress, consuming lots of processed food and sugar, and taking the pill.
Sometimes all it takes is replacing the beneficial bacteria with a probiotic and removing possible problem foods to notice a difference.
4. Overburdened Liver
Our liver is our organ of detoxification and its responsible for filtering out toxins from our body. If we’re putting in processed foods or we’re in a really toxic environment, using chemicals and nasty skincare products, our liver has to work extra hard and can become over burdened. This means toxins build up and then show up in our skin.
It’s really useful here to swap out all toxic skincare and cleaning products for more natural ones, and incorporate leafy green veggies, which the liver loves!
So in summary… if your skin is flaring up and driving you mad, its your body’s way of telling you to pay attention to the inside. Before you spend all your money on fancy creams and facials, you may just need to give your body some love!
