What The Colour of Your Period Blood is Telling You…

Every month our body shows us exactly what’s up with our health, but rarely do we give it any attention; we can just plug it up or replace a used pad and flush the loo without a second thought!

But what if we actually used it as a secret map to show us what’s happening on the inside?

Every period is a reflection of our health from the previous months. If you’ve been stressed, partying hard, eaten extra comfort food or been running across the country without any sleep, then it’s going to show up in your period. Dun dun dun!

This is why if you’ve had a particularly busy time then your period can be late, or if you’ve been scoffing all the chocolate then you can get extra cramps. On the plus side of this, it means that you can massively control how amazing your cycle is from month to month. If that’s not a super power, I don’t know what is!

This is why we need to pay more attention to our bleed and listen to what it’s trying to tell us! Here’s what you need to know:

Bright Red

This is the dream. When there are minimal clots and the blood flows easily, it’s an indicator that your hormones are on the right track!

Pale Pink

If your blood is pale pink, then it’s likely that your periods are light and short. This is usually an indicator of low oestrogen, which is responsible for building a healthy and thick endometrial lining. Low levels can be caused from undereating, low nutrient intake or exhaustion. Your body is pretty much prioritising survival over reproduction.

Purple

When blood is thick, clotted, painful, heavy and almost purple in colour, this is a huge indication that oestrogen levels are getting too high relative to progesterone. To help balance this, it’s important to support liver health and digestion, removing excess oestrogen from the body.

Brown

Brown blood is most commonly found with spotting and a slow flow. It suggests that the blood is older and has taken longer to leave the uterus. This is a big sign that progesterone is too low. This hormone is responsible for maintaining our uterine lining, but also if levels are low then our body is unable to fully shed the lining built up all month. Managing our stress is SO important for healthy progesterone levels.

Missing Periods

If you’re not having a period it’s a big sign that your body needs some TLC. It could be down to the fact that you’re not ovulating and have low progesterone levels, or it could be down to conditions like PCOS or absolute burn out. Adequate nutrition and stress management is vital here.
